From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II。

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks。 When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home。 When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea。 With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel。

In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find。 Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the resistance。 More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Astonishing。 I did not expect to like it as much as I did。 The ending wasnt the best but Werner's death left me shocked and in tears。 A book that managed to show how unfair is the war。 Also inspiring。 Astonishing。 I did not expect to like it as much as I did。 The ending wasnt the best but Werner's death left me shocked and in tears。 A book that managed to show how unfair is the war。 Also inspiring。 。。。more

It was a great book。 The story followed the lives of two young persons during WWII。 A blind girl who has to grow up fast and a German boy who stays true to his beliefs。 Very interesting and touching。 I enjoyed it very much。

Words can not describe how much I loved this book。 Instantly one of my all time favourites! The story feels so real and the descriptions are so stunning that I feel like I have been to the french town of Saint Maalo。This is one of those books, the story of which will stay with me forever。

Loved the book and the plot, thought it was slow in areas but would recommend。

My student handed me this book on my last day before early maternity leave。 Returning to the classroom almost two years later, I discovered this lil gem hidden amongst my teacher boxes。 I dove in, grateful for a semblance of my previous campus。 Forever grateful for the arduous & complex journey(s) traveled with the characters。 Doer shatters skepticism for prophetic intuition by captivating the senses in each scene。

Beauty in the hatred and horror of warA novel that weaves between time, place and events with seemingly disordered placement, yet there is order and clarity to the unfolding of this beautifully written story。At its heart is a story of the human soul, the relationships that are present between individuals, some that last lifetimes, others that are fleeting, but no less profound。The cruelty, inhumanity and senselessness of war is presented, unflinchingly。 Yet the love, humanity and sensitivity of Beauty in the hatred and horror of warA novel that weaves between time, place and events with seemingly disordered placement, yet there is order and clarity to the unfolding of this beautifully written story。At its heart is a story of the human soul, the relationships that are present between individuals, some that last lifetimes, others that are fleeting, but no less profound。The cruelty, inhumanity and senselessness of war is presented, unflinchingly。 Yet the love, humanity and sensitivity of the human experience, of kinship and friendships, of love and loss, of longing and hope, is the foundation upon which this book stands。A thoroughly absorbing, engaging and evocative novel and one that creates a lasting impression。 。。。more

Truth be told, I've been intimidated to read All the Light We Cannot See for years。 You know why?

Both Marie and Werner are likeable and sympathetic, and Doerr writes beautifully about their stories while exploring themes of childhood innocence, empathy (for both allies and enemies), fate and free will。 I thought the fantasy/historical fiction blend + the non-sequential narrative push the book into the YA genre, making it widely accessible, but detracting from heavier themes I usually associate with WWII fiction。

I really loved it, but jumping back and forth between periods of time did not contribute to the book at all。 It was confusing。 Several times I had to go back and look to see what year it was。 What was the point of writing the book that way? I understand when other books use that method because it makes sense to the story。 Also, the book toward the end seemed to go on too long。 I was fine not knowing more about Frederick without revisiting this character in the end。

Had been meaning to read/listen to this for at least five years now。 What a lovely, heavy book。 Beautiful writing, terrible subject。 Doerr gives a humanizing voice to all the characters, and also provided good closure to many plot lines。 But I think I need to read/listen to something a little happier after this。

The writing was beautiful!

I love WW2 books。 I have read so many of them。 This one fell flat for me。 Not an engaging story? Too many bloated sentences? The story flipping between years, without warning? I'm not sure what it was, but this book was very disappointing。 I love WW2 books。 I have read so many of them。 This one fell flat for me。 Not an engaging story? Too many bloated sentences? Might be the absolute best book I have read so far。

I’m giving this book 3 stars because of the immense talent it took to write a book of this caliber with all its moving pieces and the lives that were touched as well as the research it took to craft the characters。 However, the story line was slow, and i felt as though I was reading for ages。

What more can I say that hasn't already been said? This title is weighed down with awards and starred reviews, and rightly so。 It is filled with all the common themes that plague and bless humanity。 I will make a special note of the fact that this story touches in a small way on the profound power of books, which is that when one is reading, so often, they see surprising parallels between the content of the story and the themes in their own lives; in this book, Marie-Laure and those around her e What more can I say that hasn't already been said? 。。more
